Netflix Reportedly Considering Entering the Boxing Streaming Service Market

According to reports, Netflix is exploring the possibility of venturing into the world of boxing streaming services. The streaming giant is set to kick off its foray into live sporting events with "The Netflix Cup" on November 14.

Possible Boxing Match with Jake Paul

Netflix is rumored to be in talks to broadcast a boxing match featuring popular YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul. This comes after Paul's recent loss to Tommy Fury.

The Netflix Cup: A Golf Tournament

The tournament in question is actually a golf competition that will showcase athletes from Netflix's popular documentaries "Drive to Survive" and "Full Swing". However, the company has reportedly discussed the idea of including a boxing fight in its programming.

Premier Boxing Champions and a New Home

If Netflix decides to pursue this venture, the boxing match could potentially feature fighters from Premier Boxing Champions, a show previously aired on Paramount's Showtime. Premier Boxing Champions boasts stars like middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and is currently seeking a new broadcasting platform after being dropped by Paramount.

Early Stages and Uncertainty

While discussions about adding a boxing match to Netflix's programming have been ongoing for years, it is important to note that the talks are still in a "very early stage" and may not materialize.

Joining the Ranks of Amazon Prime

If Netflix does decide to enter the sports broadcasting arena, it would be following in the footsteps of Amazon Prime, which streams events from prestigious leagues like the Premier League. Previously, Netflix had resisted this move due to the high costs associated with sports broadcasting rights.

Netflix's Stance on Sports

Netflix has traditionally focused on producing a wide range of shows and documentaries, including sports-related content like "Sunderland 'Til I Die" and "Beckham". In January, co-Chief Executive Ted Sarandos stated that Netflix is not against sports but rather prioritizes profitability. However, Sarandos also hinted that the company's stance could evolve, leading to the introduction of "The Netflix Cup".

It is worth noting that Jake Paul's fights will be available for streaming on DAZN after his next two bouts. Netflix has previously collaborated with Paul on the documentary "Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child".
