‘Not impressive’ – Boxing pros give their verdicts on Canelo’s points win over Golovkin including Eubank Jr

, ‘Not impressive’ – Boxing pros give their verdicts on Canelo’s points win over Golovkin including Eubank Jr

BOXING pros slated Canelo Alvarez’s trilogy triumph over fellow legend Gennady Golovkin.

And as fighters condemned the “unimpressive” contest, Brit Chris Eubank Jr urged GGG, 40, to step down to fight him at middleweight or retire.

Canelo Alvarez lands on Gennady Golovkin but the two legends failed to deliver convincing blows as far as top pros were concerned

Big names in boxing reckoned Golovkin rarely threatened in Canelo’s tame points victory by 116-112, 115-113, 115-113.

But Mexican Canelo, 32, revealed he needs surgery on his left hand ahead of a possible revenge bid against Dmitry Bivol.

Fight rivals, though, were quick to point the finger after he made it two wins and a draw from three bouts with Kazakh hero Golovkin.

Enzo Maccarinelli perhaps nailed the common verdict when claiming Canelo won far easier than the scorecards suggested.

Wales’ ex-world cruiserweight king posted: “9-3 and that’s being generous two warriors one still elite and one not anymore boxing is about timing.”

Former world welterweight champ Paul Malignaggi insisted: “Canelo always had this fight in his back pocket. Not impressive. Benavidez is the real test at 168 not a 40 year old GGG.”

And ex- super-middleweight title-holder Caleb Truax tweeted: “Those are three of the worst scorecards of all time.”

A third American, one-time light-middeweight king Sergia Mora, claimed: “Them scorecards being read put more worry in Canelo than the 12 rounds he just went with GGG!! 115-113! Wow!”

At least Eubank Jr looked forward rather than back as he suggested Golovkin should stop fighting at super-middleweight.

He posted: “GGG you had a great run. Come back down to middleweight & let’s fight for those belts you still have in December or just pass em over & I’ll look after them for the next couple years while you enjoy retirement… you earned it champ.”

But fans jabbed back at Eubank on social media – claiming GG would still have his measure.

  • Combination

  • Spares

Punching Techniques

There are seven kinds of punches: Left Hook, Right Hook, Uppercut, Cross, Straight, Overhand and Underhand. Each punch is different. Some punches need more power than others. A strong uppercut for example requires a lot of force. However, a straight punch is much more powerful and faster than other punches.

There are also different combinations. These are combinations that combine punches to accomplish a particular goal. One combination can have many parts. For example, a combination of a left and right hook will result in damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

A boxer uses his body to protect himself against attacks. He does this by using his legs.

Legs

A boxer must use his legs to defend against kicks. When he’s hit, he raises his right leg and runs away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked in the side, he bends down if the attacker attacks from the front. But if the attack comes in the back, he will stand straight and block the kick using his foot.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very powerful because they inflict great pain. You can either deliver an elbow strike directly, or indirectly. Directly means you hit your opponent directly with your forearm. While indirectly, it means you hit him with another section of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their hands as a shield against incoming punches. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. They then touch the attackers fist.

Knees

Boxers should bend their knees when receiving blows to the abdomen, stomach, or chest. For defense purposes, knee strikes are common.

Feet

Stances

Boxing effectively requires a boxer to have a good stance. His stance determines how he defends himself. It defines where he faces his opponent and how he positions his body. Boxers can take many different stances. These are some of our most favorite:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

A boxer must change his position, speed and rhythm in order to win the fight. This involves changing positions, speed, rhythm and timing.

Rotation

A boxer will rotate his arm when he is throwing a punch. Different types of punches require different speeds for the rotation.

Combinations

Timing of each punch is crucial to the effectiveness of a combination. A combination that is effective starts with a strong punch, and ends with one that is weak.
