Minister of Entertainment Calls for Exceptional Value for Boxing Fans
Saudi Arabia's minister of entertainment, Turki Alalshikh, has made an unprecedented request for a reduced pay-per-view (PPV) price for the upcoming "Day of Reckoning" fight card featuring Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Alalshikh is urging broadcasters to offer "exceptional value" by pricing the PPV at just £19.99 in the United Kingdom.
Star-Studded Line-Up for Blockbuster Boxing Event
The blockbuster boxing event, set to take place later this month at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, will feature Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Wilder will face Joseph Parker in one bout, while Joshua will take on Otto Wallin in the main event. The card also includes Daniel Dubois against Jarrell Miller and Dmitrii Bivol's WBA super light heavyweight title defense. Unbeaten duo Jai Opetaia and Filip Hrgovic are also scheduled to fight on the card.
Minister Alalshikh's Plea for Affordable Pricing
Minister Turki Alalshikh emphasized the importance of affordability for boxing fans, stating, "We want all boxing fans to be able to join this evening with us, so we have requested that all of our broadcast partners reduce the Pay per view to these prices to offer exceptional value for the fans." The requested prices are £19.99 GBP for the UK, $39.99 USD for the US and Canada, and $21.99 USD for the rest of the world.
Context: Previous PPV Prices and Riyadh Season
Alalshikh's call for reduced PPV pricing comes after fans in the US paid $80 to watch Tyson Fury's win over Francis Ngannou in October. UK fans, on the other hand, were able to watch the super fight for £21.95. Alalshikh has been the mastermind behind a series of events held as part of Riyadh Season, which includes both the "Day of Reckoning" card and Fury vs Ngannou. The festival will continue with various sporting events, including Fury's undisputed heavyweight title bout with Oleksandr Usyk on February 17, 2024.
