Boxing’s fundamental skills are:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Movement of the body
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Sparring

Punching Techniques

There are seven kinds of punches: Left Hook, Right Hook, Uppercut, Cross, Straight, Overhand and Underhand. Each punch is unique. Some punches require more strength than others. An uppercut, for instance, requires tremendous strength. On the other hand, a straight punch requires less power but it is faster than other punches.

There are many combinations that can be used to punch. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. An entire combination could have several parts. For example, a combination of a left and right hook will result in damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

To defend himself from being attacked, a boxer uses his entire body. He does this by using his legs, arms, elbows, hands, knees and feet.

Legs

Boxers must use their legs to defend themselves against kicks. After receiving a kick, he will raise his leg and move away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked on the sides, he bends at his knees when the attacker strikes from the front. If the attack is from the side, he will bend his knees to avoid being kicked on the side.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very powerful because they inflict great pain. An elbow strike may be delivered directly or in an indirect manner. Directly means you hit your opponent directly with your forearm. While indirectly, it means you hit him with another section of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use both their hands and arms to prevent incoming blows. They raise their fists high above their heads and point them in the direction of an attack. They then touch the attackers fist.

Knees

When receiving a blow to the stomach, abdomen or chest, a boxer should bend his knees to absorb the impact. Knee strikes are often used for defense purposes.

Feet

Boxers should respond to being attacked by their opponent by standing back and delivering counter-attacks. This will help him gain distance from his opponent. Additionally, boxers need to maintain their balance when they counter-attack.

Stances

Boxing effectively requires a boxer to have a good stance. How he defends his self will depend on how he stances. It dictates how he places his body and faces his opponent. There are many positions that boxers can adopt. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

A boxer must be able to move around his opponent in order to win a fight. This involves changing positions, speed, rhythm and timing.

Rotation

Rotating his arm to increase the puncher’s reach is a key part of boxing. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each punch determines the effectiveness of a combination. A combination that is effective starts with a strong punch, and ends with one that is weak.

Sparring

Sparring is an exercise session to improve boxing skills. During sparring sessions, a boxer trains his mind as well as his body. The purpose of sparring is, in short, to learn how fight and not get hurt.

To sum it all, boxing requires patience and dedication. To become a better fighter, you have to train hard and continue to work.
