Fans of both sides got in the spirit of things with body paint and masks

Cricket fans were let in on Thursday but the stadium was only allowed to be filled to 25 per cent capacity.

Masks were also compulsory but the fans in the stands took it one step further.

A group of four lads were pictured in head to toe hazmat suits complete with rubber gloves, masks and goggles.

But they didn’t seem to be taking things too seriously as they sipped on pints of lager.

Two women donned pink wigs as they made their way into the famous cricket ground.

Australian fans have been called muppets in the past but two left onlookers in no doubt as they arrived dressed as Cookie Monster and Elmo.

Indian fans also joined in the fun with face paint and elaborate flags.

One even painted his arms and mask to complete the look.

Former Australian prime minister John Howard was also in the stands but his outfit was far more subdued as he arrived in a simple suit.

Australia chose to bat first in the third Test of the four match series.

And they made a great start making 166/2 before stumps on day one.

Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith were still in with 67 and 31 respectively.

Will Pucovski and David Warner got out for 62 and five with the home side looking in good shape for the win.
