The England cricket captain is one of six nominees for the award

England won the series 3-0 to round off a very successful year for the Test team.

Since Stokes took over as captain England have won nine out of ten tests.

He was also part of the England team that won the T20 World Cup in November and scored the winning runs in the final.

As a result, Stokes has been nominated for BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year.

But he was unable to attend the ceremony due to a stomach bug, according to his wife Clare.

Stokes is one of six nominees for the award and was well enough to speak to presenter Gary Lineker via a video call.

He reflected on the past few months and shared how proud he was over the recent wins.

Stokes said: “Managed to land back in the country this morning. It’s been an amazing three months to look back on, seeing the lads on stage brought back some great memories.

“Pakistan was another progression for our test team – to be the only team to whitewash them in Pakistan.”

Lineker also asked Stokes about the dramatic T20 final win over Pakistan.

In response the 31-year-old said of the win: “For some reason those finals always go down to the wire I loved every moment of those five weeks in Australia.”
