Biggest Cricket Fans in London and the West Midlands: Survey Reveals

London and the West Midlands Lead the Way

A recent survey of 2,000 adults has found that London and the West Midlands are home to the biggest cricket fans in the UK. With famous grounds at Lords and Edgbaston, it comes as no surprise that 61% of Londoners are fans of the sport, well above the national average of 40%.

The Love for Cricket in the West Midlands and the North West

Following closely behind London, the West Midlands (44%) and the North West (41%) are also hotspots for cricket. These regions have a large number of passionate supporters and are known for their love of the game.

Youthful Enthusiasm

It seems that young people are the most enthusiastic cricket fans, with 51% of 18- to 24-year-olds declaring their love for the sport, the highest among all age groups. Those aged 25 to 34-year-old came in second, with 43% being self-professed cricket lovers.

Online Platforms Keep Fans Updated

TV (66%), sports websites and apps (55%), and social media (32%) are the main ways that cricket fans keep up to date with matches and events. The digital age has made it easier than ever for fans to stay connected to the sport they love.

Knowledge of the Game

According to the research, Londoners have the highest confidence in their understanding of cricket, with 37% claiming to have a very good or good knowledge of the game. The North West follows closely behind, with 26% feeling well-informed about bat and ball.

A New Generation of Fans

In an effort to engage a younger audience, Compare the Market and The Hundred have partnered with three social media video gamers who will be commentating on key games throughout the tournament. Captain Puffy, SMajor, and Solidarity Gaming, with over three million followers on their social media platforms, will educate their communities about the game and help create a new generation of cricket fans.

"I didn’t know much about cricket before I got into The Hundred but I’m getting to grips with it pretty quickly and turning into quite the fan," said Captain Puffy. "It’s such a fast-paced game and it’s been amazing to be a part of and educate my community along the way."

Mark Vile, from Compare the Market, added, "It has been great opening up The Hundred to a new and younger audience in this way with the help of our gamers, allowing for a new generation of fans to soak up the electrifying atmosphere the game has to offer. We look forward to engaging more fans throughout the tournament and experiencing some world-class cricket along the way."
