TV’S Matt Smith swapped his microphone for the shopping bags during the height of the pandemic last year.

The BT Sport presenter applied for a job as a Tesco delivery driver when there was no sport to host on telly.

TV host Matt Smith has been working a second job as a delivery driver

Now he has been forced to ditch the van and get back to the day job of presenting England’s Ashes tilt in Australia.

But the 54-year-old revealed he is trying to keep plates spinning by taking on a couple of shifts in between Tests in cricket’s greatest rivalry.

He told the Times: “The honest answer is I did it for a few reasons

“With no sport on TV at that time, I was sitting at home with not much to do.

“But I also thought it would be good to get out there and help people during what was a difficult period, particularly those in isolation.

“I’ve found the experience quite grounding, really. It puts things into perspective.

“You get to deliver to all sorts of people, which I like, and for some customers you really might be their only point of contact in a whole day.”

Smith fronted coverage of England’s nine-wicket defeat in the opening Test from BT’s London studio.

Doing so means he can keep his hand in at his local Tesco – although he had to explain to his boss he won’t be around as much.

He added: “At one stage I was doing about 20 hours a week for Tesco but I’ve had to cut it back to just a couple of shifts.

“I was out doing my deliveries on Monday night.

“I’ve explained to the manager at my local branch that I won’t be around for the next couple of weeks because of the cricket, but he’s fine with that.”
