Carl Frampton ‘to fight Jamel Herring for world title on December 19 in London’ to set up trilogy of HUGE fight weekends

CARL FRAMPTON’S dream of becoming Ireland’s first-ever three-weight world champion has moved a step closer.

The 33-year-old – who is a former IBF super-bantamweight and WBA featherweight champ – is targeting Jamel Herring’s WBO super-featherweight strap.

Carl Frampton and WBO champ Jamel Herring are poised to get it on before the end of the year

Frampton, Steve Collins and Katie Taylor are the only three Irish fighters to pick up world titles in two weight classes.

And according to the Irish Boxing, the Belfast boxer will be given the chance to create history on December 19 in London.

The dust-up has long been in the works ever since the pair met after the Jackal’s victory against Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas last November.

They were set to face each other in the summer, only for the contest to be scrapped as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

SunSport reported in August after Frampton’s win over Darren Traynor that he was edging closer to securing the bout to pit his wits against Herring.

And now it has been reported that the two will square off inside the ring in the capital at the end of 2020.

Whoever emerges as the victor will then have to defend the belt against WBO mandatory Shakur Stevenson within 90 days.

Framtpon has lost his last two world title fights – first in the rematch against Leo Santa Cruz in January 2017 when he had his WBA strap ripped away.

And then to Josh Warrington when he failed to beat the IBF featherweight king in December 2018.

Should Frampton face Herring on December 19, it will be the third weekend in a row of blockbuster bouts to be staged in Britian.

Tyson Fury’s homecoming fight will take place on December 5 at the Royal Albert Hall with an opponent to be announced shortly.

Anthony Joshua then defends his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight belts against Bulgarian veteran Kubrat Pulev a week later at the 02 Arena.
