England Cricket Star Tom Curran Banned for Threatening Umpire in Big Bash

England cricket star Tom Curran has received a four-match ban in the Big Bash for threatening to run into an umpire during a practice run-up on the pitch. The incident took place during a game between Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes on December 11. Curran, who took 3-19 in the match, was reported by match referee Bob Parry for "intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire" and has been found guilty of a Level 3 offence. Sydney Sixers have announced that they will appeal the ban.

Curran's Offense

During warm-ups before the match, Curran was attempting a practice run-up on the pitch when the fourth umpire tried to stop him. Only the captain and team coach are permitted to walk on the pitch to assess its condition, and spiked footwear is not allowed. Cricket Australia claimed that after being told not to run on the pitch, Curran went to the other end and attempted another practice run-up. He gestured to the umpire to move away from the pitch and then attempted to run straight towards the umpire, who stepped to his right to avoid a collision.

Four-Match Ban

Curran contested the charge but was found guilty and received four suspension points, resulting in a four-match ban. As a result, he will miss Sydney Sixers' upcoming matches against Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder, and Brisbane Heat.

Reaction and Appeal

Commentator Jason Richardson described the incident as "totally and utterly ridiculous" and emphasized that an experienced international cricketer should not be intimidating an umpire. However, Sydney Sixers boss Rachael Haynes has stated that the club will vigorously appeal the ban. Haynes maintains that Curran did not intentionally intimidate the match official and believes they have a strong case to support their appeal.

Tom Curran, the older brother of all-rounder Sam Curran, has represented England in two Tests, 28 one-day internationals, and 30 T20 internationals. He was recently bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for £140,000 in the India Premier League auction.
