Fans are only just realising why England Ashes hero Stuart Broad still wears a headband despite his short hair

THE REASON Stuart Broad still wears a headband despite his short hair has been revealed.

Broad sported the head gear during this summer’s Ashes series against Australia as he starred with the ball.

The England seamer ended his career on Monday by taking the final two wickets to win the fifth test and draw the series.

He had announced his retirement from cricket at the end of play on Saturday and will now take up a role as part of Sky Sports’ cricket coverage.

However, fans are only just finding out why Broad wears a headband despite no longer having long hair.

The 37-year-old sported a longer haircut during the early days of his career before switching to short hair.

He has credited multiple factors for his decision to keep the headband, though, having briefly stopped wearing it after Covid.

It would later make a return after he noticed he was not getting as many wickets, admitting he “felt naked” without it.

Broad explained after the match: “Everywhere I looked round the ground I could see little pockets of fans with them on.

“It was a really nice gesture to see headbands all around the crowd. It ended up being a little bit of a superstition after Covid. It really made me smile.”

During the pandemic, players were told not to use sweat or saliva to give the ball a better chance of swinging.

The decision prompted Broad to bring back the headband in May 2020.

Announcing the decision he tweeted: “Headband has been added to stop sweat dripping down my face, so hopefully I get out the habit of touching my face while bowling.”

His heroic final act as an England player on Monday came after he repeated his superstitious bails trick.

Having done the same on day two, Broad flipped the bails after struggling for a wicket before taking one with his next ball.

Broad’s popstar wife Mollie King then watched on in tears as he took the final Australian wicket to win the match for England.
