Iconic cricket ground could be SOLD in £23m deal to secure cash-strapped club’s survival

Financial Troubles

Yorkshire County Cricket Club is reportedly considering selling Headingley Cricket Ground in order to ensure the club's survival. The club purchased the ground in 2005 and could now potentially sell it for a staggering £23 million.

Big Return

The figure represents a significant return on investment for Yorkshire, who have faced financial pressures, including a loss of sponsors and costs from the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal, totaling around £3.5 million. The club has been looking for £20 million in new investment but has had no success thus far.

Interest from Prominent Figures

Former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, a Saudi prince, and some IPL franchises have reportedly expressed interest in investing in Yorkshire. However, no deals have materialized.

Leasing Back the Ground

Yorkshire is considering selling the ground and then leasing it back in a similar model that has been used by football clubs. Several bids to buy the club outright have reportedly been rejected as members still wish to retain control.

Funding Obligations

A sale of the ground would provide the necessary funds to pay off a £15.9 million bill owed to the family of former chairman Colin Graves. The remaining money from the sale could cover running costs for several years.

A Legacy of Cricketing Moments

Headingley Cricket Ground has been the site of memorable cricketing moments, including Ben Stokes' heroics during the Ashes series in 2019 and Mark Wood and Chris Woakes' successful efforts against the Aussies earlier this year.

Season's Bills Covered

The money generated from the Ashes test held at Headingley earlier this summer was enough to cover Yorkshire's bills for the season. The club's chief executive, Stephen Vaughan, expressed optimism about securing the long-term future of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
