Reports in India claim the former batsman suffered a heart attack and will undergo surgery on Saturday evening.

It’s believed Ganguly will have a procedure called an angioplasty – used to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins.

Ganguly starred for India for 16 years, between 1992 and 2008 before retiring.

The batsman is regarded as one of his nation’s best ever captains, both in Test and ODI formats.

Ganguly skippered India between 2000 and 2005, losing just 13 of his 49 Tests in charge, while winning 76 ODIs as captain.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ganguly played 113 Test matches, averaging 42.17 with the bat, including 16 centuries and 35 50s, with a high score of 239.

He also averaged 41.02 in 311 ODIs, hitting a sensational 22 tons and 72 half-centuries, including a top knock of 183.

Also a handy bowler, Ganguly picked up 32 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets.

Ganguly has been president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019.
