IPL cricket star Daren Sammy has accused Sunrisers Hyderabad of racism and slammed the “degrading” nickname he was allegedly given.

The former West Indies skipper released a video last week claiming he had been labelled ‘Kalu’.

So recently I discovered a word that I was being called was not what it actually meant I need some answers. So before I start calling out names I need these individuals to reach out and please tell me there’s another meaning to that word and when I was being called it,it was all in love. #blackandproud #blackandconfident #clarasboy #saynotoracism #stopracism #cricketer #stlucia

Sammy, 36, a T20 World Cup-winning captain, said he was subjected to the chants during his time with Hyderabad from 2013-14.

He also claims Sri Lanka player Thisara Perera was labelled ‘Kalu’ – which is a derogatory term used for black people.

Sammy said he originally thought the word meant “strong stallion”.

He wrote on Instagram: “Oh so that’s what that meant when they called me and Thisara Perera Kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers.

“I just thought they were calling me strong black man… I’m more p*** now.”

In a separate story post he wrote: “I just learnt what that kalu meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL.

“They called me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong stallion.

“My previous post tells me something different and I am angry.”

Sammy also referenced on his story an episode of TV show Patriot Act which explored casual racism in Indian households, the Indian Express reports.

Sammy also posted this on Twitter saying he saw his former team-mates as ‘brothers’

The episode claims it is common in “many families” to label black people ‘Kalu’.

Sammy has since released a video to his 839,000 Instagram followers saying he will message those who allegedly called him the word.

He said: “I have played all over the world and I have been loved by many people.

“i have embraced all dressing rooms where I have played.

“I was listening to Hasan Minhaj as to how some of the people in his culture describe black people.

“This does not apply to all people, so after I found out a meaning of a certain word, I had said I was angry on finding out the meaning and it was degrading.

“Instantly I remembered when I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. I was being called exactly the same word which is degrading to us black people.”

Sammy alleges his former team-mates used to laugh every time they called him the name.

He added: “I will be messaging those people, you guys know who you are.

“I thought at the time when I was being called that word it meant strong stallion.

“Every time I was called that word, there was laughter. I thought it must be funny.

“Now I realise it was degrading. I will be texting you guys and I will ask you if you meant it in any bad way or form?”
