Pakistan Appoints Disgraced Former Captain Salman Butt as New Selector

Pakistan has made the controversial decision to name Salman Butt, their disgraced former captain, as a new selector. This marks Butt's first involvement in international cricket since he was jailed in 2011 for his role in a spot-fixing scandal.

The Spot-Fixing Scandal

In 2010, Butt was involved in a conspiracy to deliberately bowl no-balls during the Lord's Test against England. This scandal rocked the cricketing world and resulted in severe consequences for Butt and his teammates.

Butt was sentenced to 30 months in jail and was banned from playing cricket for ten years. His fellow fast bowlers, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, who were just 18 years old at the time, also faced bans for their involvement.

Return to Domestic Cricket

While Amir did make a comeback to the Pakistan team in 2016, both Butt and Asif chose to return to domestic cricket instead. Butt, now 39 years old, has been working as a TV pundit in Pakistan before being appointed as a selector.

New Selector Panel

Butt will be joined on the selector panel by Wahab Riaz, who has been appointed as the new chief selector. Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar are the other members of the panel.

According to a spokesperson from the Pakistan Cricket Board, their first assignment will be the five-match T20 series against New Zealand in January. Additionally, they may be assigned other tasks such as conducting skills camps.

Immediate Effect

Butt's new role as a selector will begin immediately, just in time for Pakistan's upcoming series against New Zealand in January. However, it is important to note that Butt has never made a return to international cricket since the spot-fixing scandal.
