MANCHESTER UNITED left Anthony Martial in his hotel room for Sunday’s game with Southampton after falling ill overnight.

The French forward travelled with the Red Devils to St Mary’s for the 2pm kick-off.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could not select his first-choice forward in his line-up.

The manager confirmed to MUTV, via utdreport, that Martial fell ill overnight.

As a result, the 24-year-old was left ‘by himself’ to watch the game.

It is not yet known whether Martial was suffering from coronavirus-like symptoms.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford started for United in their colleague’s absence, with Edinson Cavani on the bench.

Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones were also unavailable.

Martial had suffered indifferent form in the early weeks of 2020-21, and is still yet to score in the Premier League.

Paul Scholes has been one to question the striker’s mentality following his difficult in backing up last year’s top form.

The ex-midfielder said in the week: “I don’t think he’s got that movement for centre-forward, he’s not good with his back to goal.

“But when he gets the ball and he’s facing someone, it’s a different position. You see him going at someone.

“He’s a little moody but once he gets a goal there’s every chance he’ll go on to get three or four.”
