Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta slams Granit Xhaka after his 11th career red card as Alan Shearer calls lunge ‘inexcusable’

ARSENAL boss Mikel Arteta has admitted his anger at Granit Xhaka for getting sent off against Manchester City on Saturday.

But the under-fire Spaniard also blasted ‘inconsistent’ refereeing.

Xhaka, 28, was red carded in the 35th minute for a two-footed lunge on Joao Cancelo, with the Gunners already 2-0 down.

Gabriel Jesus swiftly added a third before half-time, with City ultimately cruising to a 5-0 win.

After the match Arteta, 39, told BT Sport: “‘I am (angry) because of the consequences that it had to the team.

“I must say that the line we are being judged with is really, really thin because we have seen actions like that in the first two Premier League games and nothing happened and I am disappointed.”

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer blasted Xhaka’s challenge as ‘inexcusable’.

The 51-year-old said: “That’s 11 red cards in his career, you can’t excuse this.

“All he’s said to his teammates is ‘sorry you’re on your own I don’t feel this today’. Who he’s trying to impress? I don’t know.

“You cannot tackle and go in like that, we all know the rules. He’s putting his opponent in danger.

“It’s the correct decision and he’s said to his teammates ”sorry you’re on your own thanks very much I don’t fancy it today’.”

Gunners boss Arteta also felt that Calum Chambers was fouled in the build-up to City’s second goal.

He added: “I am very disappointed with the second goal because of the way that they allowed that goal.”
