Piers Morgan has called for the Premier League season to be cancelled and started again in August
Liverpool fans reacted furiously to his suggestion with the Reds on the verge of a first title in 30 years

The Premier League finally bowed to pressure and announced they are suspending the season for three weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak.

It comes with the UK gripped by the crisis with millions of Brits sent home from work with over 500 confirmed cases and 10 deaths.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi have tested positive for the deadly bug.

Today Everton and Bournemouth joined Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester and Watford in putting their squads into self-isolation.

Now Morgan has called for authorities to do the “only fair thing” and just start the season again in August.

However, his suggestion was met with fierce criticism from Liverpool supporters with the Reds 25 points clear at the top of the table and on the verge of a first title in 30 years.

Morgan tweeted: “Only fair thing to do is abandon this season & start all over again in August as if it never happened. Heart-breaking for Liverpool, Leeds etc but this is an unprecedented global pandemic that is going to get a lot worse & frankly a few hurt football fans’ feelings don’t matter.”

Within seconds the Red half of Merseyside were bashing his suggestion.

One said: “I’d love to see Piers opinion if Arsenal were actually doing well.”

Another said: “Doubt you’d say this if Arsenal were top of the league.”

A fellow Liverpool fan wrote: “You definitely want that won’t you? Liverpool having a great season while Arsenal aren’t. The correct thing to say is put a halt to things and take off again once this virus is behind us.”

As another tweeted: “You are a class a melt. If arsenal were top youd be saying the complete opposite. Forget club ties. The right thing to do is suspend and play at a later date.”

And a fellow Liverpool follower wrote: “If ever a bloke needed poking in between the eyes.”

However, the much-maligned TV star did also have some support.

One user responded: “For the first time, I have to agree with Piers. There are some things bigger in life than football.”

And another said: “Who gives a s*** about football. Never mind the fact that as many as 1,822,400 people might die along the way. Whats the cost of a few loved ones eh?”
