Arsenal hope to reunite William Saliba with Saint-Etienne partner Wesley Fofana next transfer window

ARSENAL could get William Saliba’s time at Emirates Stadium off to the perfect start… by immediately reuniting him with Saint-Etienne centre-back partner Wesley Fofana.

The 19-year-old duo were regulars at the back together in the second half of the 2019-20 campaign – being shown faith by former Leicester and Southampton manager Claude Puel.

Fofana has tussled with high-profile opposition this season

With the Ligue 1 season having been halted because of the coronavirus pandemic, Saliba’s loan spell at Saint-Etienne appears to have come to a premature end.

But that doesn’t mean that he is necessarily finished playing with Fofana…

According to French website But! Football Club, the Gunners have been put on alert by Fofana’s breakthrough performances this season and are interested in bringing him to North London.

Last season Arsenal fought off interest in Saliba from Tottenham Hotspur by allowing the French youth international to stay in France on a season-long loan following the £25million transfer.

But with their defence long having been an area of weakness, coupled with the uncertain futures of Shkodran Mustafi and Pablo Mari – Arsenal are likely to want to further strengthen their backline immediately.

As for Fofana himself, however, he is believed to be happy to stay at Saint-Etienne for another year… rewarding the club’s faith in him this season.

Fofana is also one of a number of centre-back options being looked at by Everton, in addition to Jean-Clair Todibo and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Saliba has been in action for Saint-Etienne this season

Saliba is all set to return to Arsenal on July 1.

But he will not be able to play for Mikel Arteta’s side until next season… even if the 2019-20 campaign is still running when he formally joins.

This is because the Premier League will prohibit new players from being registered to play in order to protect the integrity of the competition – meaning the same rule will apply to Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech.
