Arsenal suffer blow in Ben Johnson transfer chase as West Ham hand him new deal amid interest from three league rivals

WEST HAM have reportedly scuppered Arsenal and Tottenham’s hopes of signing Ben Johnson by taking up a two-year option in his contract.

The 22-year-old was due to become a free agent in June with interest clubs beginning to circle.

West Ham have reportedly tied down Ben Johnson for two more years

Discussions had been held over a new extension for the full-back.

Now the Evening Standard claims West Ham ‘have elected to take up the additional two-year option’ that was included in his package.

That will see the academy starlet, who is related to ex-England internationals Ledley King and Paul Parker, get a wage rise from the summer when it begins.

Johnson has become a first-team regular this term under David Moyes after catching the eye while deputising for first-choice right-back Vladimir Coufal.

That run of games included impressive displays in victories over Tottenham, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Arsenal were keeping a close eye on his situation along with North London rivals Tottenham.

And Liverpool were also keen as they plotted their own swoop.

But the defender is happy at the Hammers and is now hoping to earn international honours.

Johnson, who can also play in midfield or at left-back, is being monitored by England’s coaches.

He is yet to be capped by the Three Lions at any level but may get a first U21 call-up next month.
