Arsenal transfer target Pau Torres learning English after Gunners ask Santi Cazorla about defender

ARSENAL transfer target Pau Torres has been learning English after the Gunners asked Santi Cazorla about the defender.

The 23-year-old defender has been outstanding for Villarreal after returning from an impressive loan stint with Malaga.

Pau Torres is learning English after being heavily linked with a move to the Gunners

The Gunners were considering a January swoop for the Spanish centre-back before agreeing a £4.2m loan deal for Flamengo defender Pablo Mari.

Torres, 23, has a £43million release clause in his new contract but remains hot on the north Londoner’s radar.

The Villarreal starlet has hinted at a potential move to the Premier League by revealing that he’s been learning English to pass the time amid the coronavirus lockdown.

He told El Periodico Mediterraneo: “In the morning I do the training regime and then I eat in line with the guidelines established by the club.

“In the afternoon, after lunch, I study a few languages because I was learning English and now is a good time to resume it.”

In February Arsenal legend, Santi Cazorla, confirmed that his former club rang him to ask about a potential transfer for his Villarreal team-mate.

When quizzed over whether he fields calls about his highly-rated team-mates, the 35-year-old told Marca: “Yes, friends from Arsenal especially.

“They ask me about them and think they can make the jump to the Premiership tomorrow.”

Cazorla wasn’t ready to see his current team raided just yet though.

He added: “It’s good that great teams are interested in young players from Villarreal, but for the moment I tell them to leave them alone here.

“They still have to take steps forward. They both have a great personality, and their feet are on the ground.

“In Pau’s [Torres] case he hears constant talk of City or Barcelona, but he is aware that he has to keep growing as a player and that in the future we will see where he can go.”

Arsenal have long held an interest in Torres, who broke into the senior Spain squad earlier this season.

The left-footer replaced Sergio Ramos and scored on his La Roja debut in a 7-0 romp at home to Malta in November.

And has impressed in his 24 appearances for Villarreal this season.
