Arsenal would have finished just two points off relegation zone in 16th without Aubameyang’s goals last season

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG has signed a new contract at Arsenal after singlehandedly dragging his team into the Premier League top ten last season.

Mikel Arteta’s side endured a torrid 2019-20, finishing eighth on just 56 points – closer to 20th-placed Norwich than champions Liverpool.

But rather than wallow in their mediocrity, Gooners ought to breathe a sigh of relief.

After all, without Aubameyang, Arsenal would have been involved in an almighty scrap to avoid relegation.

The Gabon star, 31, scored 22 goals in the league last season – bettered only by Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy.

And without Aubameyang’s goals, Arsenal would have been 20 POINTS worse off, finishing just two points above the relegation zone in 16th, according to compare.bet.

On two separate occasions last season Aubameyang scored twice in 3-2 wins – against Everton and Watford.

Without their talismanic striker in those thrillers, the Gunners would be six points worse off.

How Arsenal would have fared without Aubameyang last season

Aubameyang scored the winner in three matches last season in a 1-0 win over Newcastle, a 2-1 victory over Burnley and the 3-2 nerve-jangler against Aston Villa, accounting for a further six points.

And on a staggering EIGHT occasions in 2019-20, Auba scored in draws – adding up to yet another eight points all by himself.

Without those 20 points, Arsenal would have finished on 36 points – enough to be relegated in most Premier League seasons – just one point above 17th-placed Villa.

Bournemouth and Watford – both ultimately relegated in 18th and 19th respectively – both mustered 34 points, just two points fewer than an Aubameyang-less Arsenal.

No wonder Arteta and Co fought tooth and nail to tie down Aubameyang to a new three-year contract.

To Arsenal, he’s worth every penny of his new pay-packet, claimed to be more than Mesut Ozil’s £350,000-a-week deal…
