ASTON VILLA fans are celebrating Steven Gerrard’s appointment as the club’s new manager, but others are mocking him for ‘slipping up’.

The former Liverpool captain was announced as Dean Smith’s successor on Thursday morning as he departed Rangers after three years in charge.

And the Villa fans were thrilled to welcome a Premier League legend in as their new manager.

One fan had a bit of fun with the Gerrard-related memes by putting his head on a Great Gatsby photo and adding: “Best midfielder of all time.”

While another of the Villa faithful simply posted a clip of Gerrard passionately celebrating to illustrate just how happy they were with the appointment.

But others were quick to hilariously make fun of the appointment as they referenced Gerrard’s unfortunate slip against Chelsea in 2014 which contributed to them losing the Premier League title.

One fan said: “I hope Frank Lampard goes to Rangers. I don’t doubt that Frank would do an even better job that Gerrard. Gerrard has made a huge slip up again.”

And the official Specsavers account also got involved in the gentle ribbing with a tweet of their own.

They said: “Did he slip into your DMs to confirm?”

But another Villa fan took a different approach, acknowledging the ‘slip up’ joke as part of the reason why he will succeed at the club.

They said: “New era at Aston Villa has begun, Steven Gerrard takes over as manager. Dean Smith had them slipping but Stevie G got Ba experience to pick them back up.

“He’s got the talents of Watkins, Bailey and McGinn, so he’ll get them balling out soon. Prem legend is back, up the Lions.”

Gerrard takes charge of Villa with the club having lost their last five Prem matches.

Smith, who achieved promotion during his time at Villa Park, leaves the team 16th in the table and just two points above the relegation zone.

New boss Gerrard’s first game in charge will be at home to Brighton after the international break.

And the ex-England captain can’t wait to get started.

He said: “Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new Head Coach.

“In my conversations with Nassef, Wes and the rest of the Board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.
