Callum Hudson-Odoi slams misfiring Chelsea for ‘letting ourselves down’ and ‘starting too slow’ against Arsenal

CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI reckons Chelsea gave a poor account of themselves during their surprise 3-1 defeat away to Arsenal.

Prior to the match the Gunners – who face Brighton next – had been on a dismal run, losing five of their previous six league games until they stunned their visitors at the Emirates.

Callum Hudson-Odoi reckons Chelsea needed more energy during their performance against Arsenal

Frank Lampard, 42, whose side reduced their deficit through Tammy Abraham, slammed his team’s performance as “not being good enough on the basics”.

And Hudson-Odoi, 20, who came on as a sub for Timo Werner and set up Abraham’s goal, concurred with his boss.

After the match Hudson-Odoi said: “It feels like we let ourselves down. We know we can do much better.

“We should have put the same energy we had in the second half into the first half as well – we should have had the same attitude from the get-go.

“We started too slow, we all know that. We knew from the start it was going to be a difficult game no matter what. They’re Arsenal, they’re a good team.

“No matter where we are in the league we’re going to keep pushing until we get to number one and no matter what the game is, we’re Chelsea, we want to give our best every game no matter what.

“We don’t like losing. That’s the Chelsea mentality, we always want to win.

“So when we lose or make a couple of mistakes, we’re all disappointed with ourselves.

“When we win, we’re always happy, when we lose we’re disappointed, so we want to get back to winning ways and stay happy.”

Arsenal, who are due to travel to the Amex, put themselves 3-0 up in 56 minutes to ease the burden on under-pressure boss Mikel Arteta.

An Alexandre Lacazette penalty and wonder strikes from Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka saw the Gunners reverse their fortunes ahead of clashes with Brighton and West Brom.

Chelsea’s loss to their Emirates opponents, who had yet to win a game since November, means they drop to seventh and six points behind Liverpool who have a game in hand.

They will take on Aston Villa side who bounced back from Tyrone Mings’s dismissal to seal a 3-0 win against Palace.

And Blues boss Lampard, who spoke of his frustration at his side missing the chance to go second, will be expecting more from  his players.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and his Blues team-mates will be looking to win against Aston Villa

Lampard said: “I’ll take responsibility on the outside but the players also have to take responsibility.

“The message was clear – Arsenal are a dangerous team. When you go out and play 60 or 70 per cent then you’re not going to win any games.

“I am angry because I want us to win games. It was an opportunity to go second. You get what you deserve.”
