‘Can’t see how they stay up’ – Everton set to be relegated with next group of fixtures ‘atrocious’, claims Paul Merson

EVERTON’S run-in makes it difficult to see how they avoid relegation, according to former Arsenal man Paul Merson.

The Toffees currently sit perilously above the drop zone, ahead of 18th place Watford by virtue of goal difference.

Lampard has suffered a terrible start to life as Everton boss

Merson feels Everton are now in huge danger of being relegated

They have lost all of their last four Premier League games and five out of six since Lampard took over at Goodison Park.

A dismal 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday deepened Everton fans’ worries.

They still have to face West Ham, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal before the end of the season.

And Merson believes their tough final two months of the campaign leave them in serious danger of dropping down to the second tier.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I don’t know if Everton think they’re too good just to go and get a point somewhere, because points mount up.

“At the moment they’re chasing their tails. Wolves at home wasn’t a good day at the office, so just get a point – you’ve got to start a run somewhere.

‘I’m looking at Everton’s fixtures and the way they’re playing and I think they’re in big trouble. I think they’re the ones to go now.

“You’ve only got to look at their fixtures – they’re atrocious. I just can’t see how they stay up.

“They’ve got games in hand, but where do they get points? You look at the Brentford game but that could be too late. I think they’ve got to beat Newcastle.”

Everton have not been relegated from the top flight since they went down at the end of the 1950/51 season.

And their current position makes the home game against Newcastle on Thursday a seismic match in their bid to avoid the drop.
