Chelsea ace Kai Havertz compared to Zinedine Zidane after impressive Euro 2020 so far by Germany icon Lothar Matthaus

CHELSEA playmaker Kai Havertz has received one of the highest compliments after being compared to the legendary Zinedine Zidane.

The Germany ace, 22, was hugely impressive in the 4-2 victory over Portugal and scored his side’s third goal of the contest.

That strike saw him become Germany’s youngest-ever scorer at a European Championships.

Havertz is already highly regarded in his native country following his breakthrough years with Bayer Leverkusen.

His impressive form in the Bundesliga saw Chelsea fork out £75.8million in 2020 and despite a largely disappointing season, was a Champions League hero after scoring the winner in the final.

And Germany legend Lothar Matthaus believes the best is yet to come with shades of Zidane in his game.

Matthaus, a World Cup winner in 1990, told Der Panzer: “I compare him to Zinedine Zidane in terms of skills, technique and overview, and anticipating a situation.

“Zidane didn’t seem quick, but it was when he hit the ball. Havertz can do that too.”

Zidane, 48, is widely considered as one the greatest midfielder of all-time although won the Ballon d’Or just once in 1998.

Matthaus added that he expects Havertz to be the face of Germany’s future once their old guard hang up their boots.

He added: “Havertz will be one of the fixed points in the national team in the next six or eight years when [Toni] Kroos, [Thomas] Müller and [İlkay] Gündoğan have finished their careers there.

“He could score more goals and improve himself in the short movements with special training.

“He has a good eye, good ball control, good positional play, fine technique.”
