Chelsea and Liverpool in transfer mix for Schalke’s Weston McKennie with US star set to leave Bundesliga in £20m move

AMERICAN midfielder Weston McKennie is set to leave Schalke this summer with Chelsea and Liverpool interested.

The Bundesliga ace is valued in the region of £20million and CBS Sports suggest he’s attracting interest from England, Spain, France and Germany.

US star Weston McKennie has shone at Schalke

The US star, 21, has impressed since joining Schalke in 2016, racking up 91 appearances in all competitions.

It is understood McKennie is looking to move to a side involved in European competition and Premier League champions Liverpool and Frank Lampard‘s Blues would fit the bill.

McKennie was praised for his efforts in a Schalke side that at one stage looked set to challenge for the top six before slipping to a 12th-placed finish.

McKennie hails from Texas and the central midfielder has won 19 caps for the senior national side and is under contract at Schalke until 2024.

Chelsea are looking to strengthen their squad further after the arrival of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

They are already strongly linked with another Bundesliga midfielder in Kai Havertz.

But Lampard may look to make a double swoop after yesterday’s 3-0 thumping at Sheffield United highlighted some problem areas and McKennie could perk his interest.

Schalke are keen to cash in amid financial trouble with a number of their best players already up for sale.

McKennie reportedly fancies testing himself in the Premier League and is looking for assurances he will get some game time – which could make West London a more attractive proposition than Merseyside.

Liverpool have an established midfield but with a number of injuries, new signings and potential outgoings, there could be a changing of the guard at Stamford Bridge.

N’Golo Kante has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Jorginho could be offloaded to free up space for midfield additions.
