Chelsea being investigated after Roman Abramovich hands over control of club with Charity Commission concerned

CHELSEA are being investigated after Roman Abramovich handed over control of the club.

The Charity Commission is concerned about the Chelsea Foundation taking the reins of the Stamford Bridge club.

They have now contacted Chelsea for further details and explanation over the change in ‘stewardship’, announced by the Russian oligarch on Saturday evening.

The six trustees are yet to formally accept the transition but talks have already begun with further discussions planned for this week.

But the Charity Commission want reassurances the football club and the foundation will remain separate entities despite potentially being run by the same people.

A spokesperson said: “We have contacted the charity seeking information and, in line with our guidance, the charity has also made a report to the commission.

“We cannot comment further.”

The trustees are still unclear whether they are legally allowed to take over running the club – and are seeking advice from lawyers on what to do next.

Chairman Bruce Buck, women’s manager Emma Hayes, John Devine, Sir Hugh Robertson, Paul Ramos and Piara Powar make up the group.

But reports claim at least TWO of the six ‘have raised concerns privately amid suggestions they will be compromised’ and could quit their roles.

It also reveals ‘individual issues of conflict of interest have been voiced as well as wider worries over whether running a football club as part of the foundation could be compatible with charity law’.

Should some of the trustees step away from the role, Chelsea will either continue with the plan without them as a smaller group, replace those who leave or scrap the plan and re-think entirely.

Abramovich’s weekend bombshell statement – days after Russia invaded Ukraine – revealed he would take a step back for the sake of the club.

The Blues’ owner, who bought the club in 2003, said: “I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart.

“I remain committed to these values.

“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans.”
