Lukaku is now being urged to apologise for the comments which have outraged fans and even surprised those close to him.

Tuchel is pondering whether to recall Lukaku for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg against fierce rivals Tottenham.

The pair held talks on Monday but the club refused to comment on any aspect of the meeting or the ongoing situation.

But it is understood Tuchel enjoys the backing of Chelsea’s benefactor Abramovich.

The Russian spent £97.5 million of his fortune bringing the Belgian to the club just five months ago.

And sources close to the player are urging him to say sorry and draw a line under the whole saga.

Tuchel has already suggested the incident can be quickly resolved by admitting ‘there is always a way back’ following Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool which Lukaku sat out.

Chelsea fans have also been quick to back Tuchel over his tough stance on Lukaku’s comments and may not be as forgiving as the German coach.

The Belgian faces a lengthy battle trying to restore their faith following this incident especially as he claims to be a Chelsea fan.

Lukaku trained on Monday with those players who missed Sunday’s match but is likely to join in a full session on Tuesday.

Tuchel will most likely make his final team selection Wednesday morning.

Dropping Lukaku was a strong message from Tuchel that he will not tolerate wildcat behaviour and comments that could harm team unity.

He even suggested that he spoke to senior players about the issue as a sounding board for disciplinary action.
