Chelsea Fails in Late Bid to Sign Marco Verratti as He Closes in on Move to New Club

Reports indicate that Chelsea's last-minute attempt to sign Marco Verratti has been unsuccessful, as the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star is now on the verge of joining a new club.

Verratti Set to Join Al-Arabi

After spending 11 years in the French capital, Verratti is poised to leave PSG as the club is ready to cash in on the midfielder.

According to trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old Italian has agreed to personal terms with Al-Arabi, a club from Qatar. The transfer is said to be worth £38 million.

Verratti is currently in the Middle East finalizing the move, including undergoing a medical examination.

A Blow for Chelsea and Other European Clubs

The news comes as a disappointment for Chelsea, who made an effort to sign Verratti on a loan deal, as reported by L'Equipe. However, PSG turned down their offer, insisting on a permanent transfer.

Bayern Munich also faced a similar fate in their endeavor to secure a loan deal for Verratti.

Meanwhile, Barcelona expressed interest in adding the Euro 2020 winner to their squad but couldn't meet the substantial transfer fee required.

Even Manchester United was linked with a surprise move for Verratti towards the end of the transfer window.

Middle East Bound all Along

Throughout the transfer saga, it was widely expected that Verratti would end up in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabian giants Al-Ahli being the favorites to sign him.

During his time at PSG, Verratti made an impressive 416 appearances, winning Ligue Un nine times and reaching the Champions League final in 2020 as a runner-up.
