Chelsea Player Ratings: Sterling Shines But Chelsea Suffer Defeat

Chelsea's wait for their first win of the season continues after a disappointing loss to West Ham in the London derby. Despite a strong performance from Raheem Sterling, Chelsea were unable to secure a victory. Here, SunSport's Anthony Chapman rates the Chelsea players based on their performances in the match.

Robert Sanchez: 6

Following Kepa Arrizabalaga's departure, Sanchez has taken over the No.1 spot. He made a good block early in the game but couldn't do much about West Ham's opener. However, Sanchez missed a crucial save for West Ham's second goal.

Axel Disasi: 5

Disasi started his Chelsea career with a goal against Liverpool but had a more challenging game against West Ham. He showed strength and awareness to contain Said Benrahma but appeared clumsy when moving out of position, allowing Antonio to score.

Thiago Silva: 6

At 38 years old, Silva continues to prove that age is just a number. He linked up well with Chelsea's midfield with some neat passes but couldn't pass on his composure to his fellow defenders.

Levi Colwill: 5

Colwill is still adjusting after his loan spell at Brighton. He was eager to get on the ball and play passes but was easily shrugged off by Antonio, leading to West Ham's second goal.

Malo Gusto: 4

Gusto was given a starting spot due to Reece James' injury. However, he lacked the energy and presence that James brings to the team. He struggled to make an impact during the game.

Conor Gallagher: 4

Gallagher's future at Chelsea is uncertain, and his performance in this game did not help his case. He struggled to assert himself offensively and defensively and may not have many more opportunities to prove his worth with new signings coming in.

Enzo Fernandez: 6

Fernandez, a World Cup winner, is reinventing himself as an attack-minded midfielder. However, he missed a penalty just before the break and didn't show much confidence afterwards.

Ben Chilwell: 6

Given the captain's armband in James' absence, Chilwell played a key role in Chelsea's only goal. He provided some good crosses but couldn't find a teammate to convert them. He was substituted in the second half.

Raheem Sterling: 8

Sterling, who had a subpar season last year, showed great determination and was a constant threat to the West Ham defense. He won a penalty for Chelsea and had his best performance in a Chelsea shirt.

Carney Chukwuemeka: 7

Chukwuemeka has impressed over the summer and continued to do so in this game with a brilliant goal. Unfortunately, he was injured just before halftime, leaving Chelsea concerned about his fitness for the next match.

Nicolas Jackson: 7

Jackson was one of Chelsea's standout performers during preseason and showed his power and skill in this game. He created an assist but lacked clinical decision-making in other situations.

Substitutes:

Mykhalio Mudryk (for Chukwuemeka, HT): 4

Mudryk failed to make a significant impact after coming on as a substitute. He struggled to hold onto the ball and was quickly dispossessed by West Ham defenders.

Moises Caicedo (for Chilwell, 60'): 5

Caicedo, the most expensive British footballer ever, made his Chelsea debut off the bench. However, he had a difficult time as Chelsea struggled, and he gave away a late penalty.

Noni Madueke (for Gallagher, 75'): N/A

Mason Burstow (for Gusto, 82'): N/A

Despite a strong performance from Sterling, Chelsea couldn't secure a win against West Ham. With only one point from their first two games, Mauricio Pochettino's team will be hoping for a change in fortunes in their upcoming match against Luton.
