Chelsea plot swoop for new defender in transfer window with Rudiger and Christensen yet to be offered new deals

CHELSEA are reportedly considering signing a new defender this summer amid uncertainty over Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s contracts.

Both centre-backs have two years to run on their current deals but any talks over renewing would come ahead of a huge transfer window for the club.

Christensen and Rudiger are both out of contract in 2022

According to Goal, negotiations have not yet begun for either Rudiger or Christensen.

And Chelsea are still weighing up whether to try and sign a fresh defender, as a result.

With Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already in the bag, attention is soon expected to turn to shoring up the defence.

Ben Chilwell of Leicester has been linked to Stamford Bridge in the left-back spot, although funds could also be diverted to sign attacking midfielder Kai Havertz.

The Bayer Leverkusen star is rated at £90million.

But the centre of defence may be a more pressing matter with Chelsea holding the ninth-worst goals conceded tally in this year’s Premier League.

Frank Lampard has been unable to settle on a first-choice partnership with Kurt Zouma the only centre-back to accumulate more than 26 appearances this season – from the club’s total of 50 games.

Fikayo Tomori has played just three times in 2020 after an early season spell in the side and neither Rudiger nor Christensen have nailed down a place.

The Blues’ problems were magnified in the defeat to Sheffield United earlier this month when the Dane was taken off after a torrid 45 minutes only for his replacement, Rudiger, to make a dire error for the Blades’ third goal.

Declan Rice is the first name on Lampard’s wish list with the West Ham midfielder eyed for a return to defence if he signs, as SunSport revealed.

West Ham would be extremely reluctant to sell their homegrown star but Tomori could be offered on loan in an exchange deal.

Kalidou Koulibaly has also be linked to the Blues but Manchester City are thought to be leading the race to sign the Napoli ace.
