Chelsea star Jorginho backed to win Ballon d’Or by Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini ahead of Champions League clash

Chiellini captained Italy to Euro 2020 glory alongside Jorginho in the summer, but the pair are now preparing to line-up on different sides of the pitch.

Chelsea and Juventus go head-to-head in a mouthwatering Champions League clash in Turin on Wednesday night.

And speaking in a press conference ahead of the Group H tie, Chiellini has revealed he ‘hopes’ 29-year-old Jorginho will land the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

The Juve stalwart has even claimed it would ‘feel like it was mine’ of Jorginho won it.

“I hope he’ll be able to win, he is a good friend of mine. It’s an award that would feel like it was mine,” the 37-year-old told reporters.

“He was involved in a win and emotions that will always be in our hearts.

“I’ve always thought he was a good player but after the first few training sessions, I realised how good he is, what a top player he is.

“He has great technical qualities, but the real difference is in his head. Many said he was only able to play with Sarri, but everywhere he goes he is a regular starter.

“I really hope he will win the Ballon d’Or.”

Jorginho initially came under fire from pundits and fans after a big-money move from Napoli in 2018.

Maurizio Sarri was the man responsible Jorginho to Stamford Bridge, with people claiming the midfielder could only play ‘Sarriball’ tactics.

But the £50million man has now established himself as a key player for both club and country.

He will make his 150th appearance for the Blues if he plays against Juventus on Wednesday night.

His stellar campaign last season culminated in Brazilian-born Jorginho winning the UEFA men’s player of the year award.

And he’s one of the favourites to land the Ballon d’Or trophy when it is awarded on December 5.
