Chelsea Struggles to Offload Players Despite Squad Complaints

Chelsea Fails to Make Deadline Day Deals

Despite manager Mauricio Pochettino's complaints about a bloated squad, Chelsea was unable to offload four players on transfer deadline day. The club's attempts to trim their roster fell short, leading to a packed first-team squad.

Departures and Arrivals

Chelsea did manage to bid farewell to winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who joined Nottingham Forest in an £8m deal. Young striker Mason Burstow was also loaned to Sunderland, while defender Bashir Humphreys secured a late move to Swansea. In total, the club offloaded 25 players this summer and welcomed 14 new faces, in addition to several returning loanees.

Failed Deals

Despite initial interest from Tottenham, Conor Gallagher will remain at Chelsea for the season after the London club rejected an initial £40m offer. Trevoh Chalobah's loan move to Bayern Munich was also blocked, with the player later turning down an offer from Nottingham Forest. Marc Cucurella was left without a destination after Manchester United chose Sergio Reguilon over him. Additionally, Ian Maatsen rejected a £32m loan-to-buy offer from former side Burnley and may now pen a new contract.

Manager's Concerns

Mauricio Pochettino voiced his concern about the size of Chelsea's squad, stating that it was challenging to manage so many players effectively. He emphasized the importance of balance and suggested that 25 players would be an ideal number, including goalkeepers.
