Chuba Akpom Set to Leave Middlesbrough for Ajax in £12m Transfer Deal

Impressive Season in Championship

Chuba Akpom, former Arsenal starlet, is reportedly on the brink of leaving Middlesbrough to join Ajax in a deal worth £12 million. The talented striker had an exceptional campaign in the Championship last season, scoring 28 goals in 38 appearances for Michael Carrick's side during the 2022-23 season.

European Admirers

Akpom's outstanding form attracted attention from clubs across Europe. Lens, who finished second in Ligue 1 and will be playing in the Champions League this season, were eager to secure his signature. However, it appears that the 27-year-old has decided to join the ranks of Ajax instead.

Deal Details

According to The Athletic, Ajax has agreed to pay an initial fee of £10.4 million, with an additional £1.6 million in potential add-ons. Akpom is expected to undergo a medical today and is then set to sign a five-year contract with the Eredivisie giants.

Arsenal Academy Graduate

Akpom began his career in Arsenal's academy, making 12 appearances for the first team before moving to Greek side PAOK in 2020. During his time with the Gunners, he had loan spells at clubs such as Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull, Brighton, and Sint-Truiden. After two years in Greece, he joined Middlesbrough in 2020.

Future with Middlesbrough

Despite the impending move, Akpom still has one year remaining on his contract with Middlesbrough. When asked about his desire to stay with the club, he expressed his love for the team and the fans, stating that he feels at home and has played his best football at Middlesbrough. However, he acknowledges that certain factors are out of his control and his focus now is on getting fit and ready to play football again.

Limited Playing Time

Akpom was named as an unused substitute in Middlesbrough's opening day defeat to Millwall and has not been included in any matchday squad since. His departure to Ajax is expected to grant him more playing opportunities and a chance to compete at the highest level in the Eredivisie.
