David De Gea set to start Man Utd’s Europa League final ahead of Henderson against Villarreal after shining vs Fulham

DAVID DE GEA looks to have won the battle to claim the goalkeeper’s shirt for the Europa League final against Villarreal later this month.

Dean Henderson’s error-strewn performance in the 4-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool saw him replaced for Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw against Fulham.

David De Gea is set to start Manchester United’s Europa League final

De Gea pulled off some fine stops and was also involved in Edinson Cavani’s wonder goal with a good ball out from the back to Bruno Fernandes.

The Spaniard, 30, had lost his regular Premier League place to Henderson in March and was relying on the Europa League for games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still weighing up his options for next Wednesday’s final against Villarreal in Gdansk.

But it looks like De Gea has now overtaken Henderson again, with the boss admitting: “I’ve got two very good goalkeepers.

“They’ve played in the last month and last six weeks more or less alternate games really. Both are ready and both are doing well.”

Both players will want assurances at the end of the season as to who is going to be the No1 going forward.

Neither want to play second-fiddle as much as Solskjaer tries to do a balancing act and convince both they are equally as important.

Dean Henderson was dropped for United’s last outing

Henderson returned from a season long loan spell at Sheffield United for this campaign on the proviso he got a shot at being No1.

While De Gea had looked to have started to lose his form there have been signs of late that he is getting back to his best.

Notably, despite losing 3-2, he made some key saves as Roma threatened to get right back into the Europa League semi-final in the second leg in Rome.
