David de Gea STARTS for Man Utd against Tottenham after last-minute negative PCR test following Covid scare

DAVID DE GEA will START in goal in Manchester United’s crunch clash with Tottenham this evening – despite his recent positive Covid test.

The Spanish stopper has been given the all-clear to feature in the pivotal match-up with Antonio Conte’s side after returning a negative PCR test.

David de Gea looks was a doubt for United’s clash with Spurs after a positive Covid test but has since returned a negative PCR

The 31-year-old star was a major doubt for the match as he tested positive for the virus via a lateral flow.

A second lateral flow came back negative – although he needed clearance from the Premier League after returning a negative PCR test.

And after learning of De Gea’s clear PCR, Prem chiefs gave him the all-clear to feature against inconsistent Spurs.

Dean Henderson was on course to fill in for the regular No1 – who has returned to top form this season.

Interim United boss Ralf Rangnick had begun preparing Henderson to fill in for De Gea prior to the news of his negative PCR.

One-cap England international, Henderson has made just three appearances in 2021-22 – and is yet to win a match.

By contrast, De Gea – who came home from his summer holidays early to reclaim the No1 spot – has been arguably United’s player of the season.

His fine performances were recognised with January’s player of the month gong and SunSport revealed the club are considering triggering a 12-month contract extension.

This evening’s crucial match against Spurs sees both sides desperately trying to improve their chances of securing a top-four finish.

But defeat could prove a major dent as the race for Champions League qualification hots up.

United go into the game in fifth, a point behind Arsenal but two clear of opponents Spurs, who they thumped 3-0 at White Hart Lane earlier in the season.

The Gunners, West Ham and Wolves all play on Sunday.

Dean Henderson was expected to take the gloves if Covid ruled the Spaniard out of the match
