Emotional Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel proud of son Kasper for equalling his goalkeeper record in 9-0 Leicester win

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed his pride at son Kasper for equalling his goalkeeping record in Leicester’s 9-0 win over Southampton.

The two Dane’s are out on their own for in the history books as the only two Premier League shot-stoppers to see their team put NINE past their opponents while keeping a clean sheet.

Kasper Schmeichel equalled a record set by his father Peter in Leicester’s 9-0 win over Southampton

Old Trafford icon Peter, 55, set the benchmark during United’s historic 9-0 win over Ipswich back in March 1995.

More than 24 years later Kasper became the first keeper to equal his father’s achievement, as Leicester hit the same number against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

And Peter was quick to express his pride on Twitter, writing: What a fantastic performance by @kschmeichel1 and his @lcfc team for winning 9-0 at Southampton.

If anyone had to equal our @ManUtd record from 94/95 Im proud and glad that it was you.

Kasper also took to social media to tweet out celebratory pictures of the match at Saint Mary’s with the caption: “Perfect performance”.

Ayoze Perez had led the way with a hat-trick while Jamie Vardy also grabbed a treble to pile misery on the Saints.

Ben Chilwell and Youri Tielemans also netted, while James Maddisons grabbed the eighth with a stunning free-kick.

Speaking after the huge result, Brendan Rodgers revealed he told his players to“punish” Southampton at half-time with his side already 5-0 up.

“We said at half time, keep your speed in the game and we have to punish them,” he said.

“It is tough for Ralph but we have to do our job and score as many goals as we can.

“The game is 0-0 at half-time we said. This is part of our education we have to come out of the boy zone and play like a man and respect the game. They are very talented and learning to be ruthless.

“Kasper is really happy, The only other keeper to have a nine was his father. We believe in our work, believe we can push over the course of the season. Our mentality is how we work every day. The players want to get better and improve.

“A great, great win and now we have to focus on the cup game.”

The three points saw Leicester climb to second in the table, only five points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Spurs are the only other team who have score nine goals in a Premier League match when they hammered Wigan in 2009.

But now-Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes conceded one strike from Paul Scharner to narrowly miss out on joining the Schmeichel’s in the elite club.
