Eric Bailly ‘wants clarification over Man Utd future’ after club agree £40m Raphael Varane transfer from Real Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Eric Bailly wants clarification over his future role at the club as they prepare to sign Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.

Bailly, 27, signed a new contract back in April to keep him at Old Trafford until 2024.

Varane is set to arrive at Old Trafford in the coming days

But as Varane prepares to seal his move to England, the Ivory Coast international is worried about sliding down the pecking order in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

And according to ESPN, he wants to have a discussion about how much first team football he can expect in the 2021-22 campaign.

If Varane arrives, Man Utd will have seven centre-backs to choose from for the new season.

Varane and club captain Harry Maguire would expect to be first choice, with Victor Lindelof also in the fray.

Then there are youngsters Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi who will want to further their development if they do not go out on loan.

And former England international Phil Jones is also still at the club despite not having played since January 2020.

Due to injuries and competition for places, Bailly has played just 106 times in five seasons for the Red Devils.

He is currently away on international duty with Ivory Coast at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

If Bailly and his fellow countryman reach the final then he will still be in Japan just seven days before the start of the Premier League season.

Man Utd kick off their campaign against Leeds on August 14, before then travelling to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.

Solskjaer has already bolstered his squad significantly in the transfer window thanks to the long-awaited signing of Jadon Sancho.

The former Borussia Dortmund man could play in a Man Utd shirt for the first time in their friendly against Everton on August 7.
