Erik ten Hag blames Man Utd stars’ wall for Lucas Digne’s stunning free-kick in 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa

ERIK TEN HAG reckons his Manchester United side’s wall were at fault for Lucas Digne’s stunning free-kick.

The Red Devils were beaten 3-1 in Unai Emery’s first game in charge of Aston Villa.

Erik ten Hag blamed Manchester United’s wall for the Aston Villa free-kick

Lucas Digne curled home from just outside the box to put the hosts 2-0 up

Leon Bailey opened the scoring early on before Digne curled in an inch-perfect free-kick to make it two.

But Ten Hag believes the goal was preventable and implied it could have even hit the wall if it was set up in the right position.

The Dutchman ripped into his side after Sunday’s dire defeat at Villa Park.

He blamed the “small details” in the game for the defeat, which included the wall not being set up properly.

Ten Hag declared: “I think the free-kick [from Lucas Digne] is stoppable because the wall is too far [over].

“Okay, these small details, but small details make a difference in top football.

“The details are everything to us because we were not fresh.

“When you start the game, you always have the attitude and I think that was one of our best standards, as we were really on the front foot and ready to play in all the games to now. Today, we were not.”

United pulled one back through a Jacob Ramsey own goal, before Ramsey made up for things minutes later by putting the ball in the right net.

The result ended Villa’s 23-game winless league run at home to the Red Devils.

Cristiano Ronaldo was named captain for the game – just weeks after he was axed from training for throwing a strop against Tottenham.

But the 37-year-old fired a blank, and failed to inspire Ten Hag’s side to victory.
