Ex-Chelsea striker Shevchenko set to become Genoa manager and will make Serie A debut against old Blues boss Mourinho

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO is set to take over as boss of Serie A side Genoa and will face old manager Jose Mourinho in his first game in charge.

Shevchenko, 45, has reportedly agreed a deal to take over the club on a two-year deal, with the option for a third.

Mourinho signed Shevchenko for Chelsea back in 2006
The striker turned manager was boss of Ukraine from 2016 until earlier this year

While Mourinho took over at Roma in the summer.

According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Ukrainian legend will fly into Italy next week to take charge of Il Grifone.

And he will be up against old boss Mourinho in his first game in the dugout as struggling Genoa host Roma.

The pair spent the 2006/07 season together at Chelsea after Mourinho signed the striker from AC Milan.

Shevchenko will take over after Davide Ballardini was sacked by Genoa with the club hovering in 15th place – just a point above the relegation zone.

He is set to put pen-to-paper on a deal worth £1.7million per-season.

The ex-Blues striker will reportedly bring former AC Milan man Mauro Tassotti as his assistant.

Andrea Maldera, Raul Riancho and former Ukraine and Tottenham striker Serhij Rebrov will also join Shevchenko in the North-West of Italy.

The former striker is the chosen one as new Genoa owners 777 Partners aim to ‘radically transform’ the fortunes of the club.

Andrea Pirlo was also reportedly considered for the role.

Shevchenko left his position as Ukraine manager in the summer after leading his home nation to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

But their run ended after a 4-0 defeat at the hands of England.

Shevchenko returns to Italy knowing all about Serie A after having two spells with AC Milan during his playing days.

He won the Champions League, Serie A title and Coppa Italia during his time at San Siro.

And the ex-striker even scooped the Ballon d’Or gong in 2004.
