Five players to cross the Chelsea/Tottenham divide and whether it worked out including Jimmy Greaves and William Gallas

ANTONIO CONTE has become the latest former Chelsea boss to cross the London divide to take the reins at Spurs.

Upon signing his 18-month deal, the Italian joins the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Andre Villas-Boas and Jose Mourinho in taking charge of both clubs.

But how have players gotten on when making the same switch?

SunSport takes a look at five that have done just that, with varying results.

JIMMY GREAVES

The late-great Jimmy Greaves produced extraordinary performances for both Chelsea and Tottenham during his incredible career.

Greaves, who sadly passed away in September, started his career at Stamford Bridge – notching 132 goals in 169 games in West London.

A brief spell at AC Milan followed in 1961, before legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson convinced him to return to these shores later that year.

Greaves would become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer over the next decade, scoring 266 goals in 379 appearances in addition to winning two FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup at White Hart Lane.

GLENN HODDLE

Hoddle came through Spurs’ academy in the 1970s to become one of the club’s greatest ever players.

The mercurial midfielder helped the North Londoners to promotion from the old Second Division in 1977, before winning two FA Cups and a Uefa Cup alongside the likes of Ossie Ardiles and Steve Perryman.

He finally left White Hart Lane in 1987, deciding that he fancied a go at playing abroad with AS Monaco.

Via a stint at Swindon, Hoddle returned to London as player/manager with Chelsea in 1993, guiding the Blues into Europe for the first time in more than 20 years.

GUS POYET

Gus Poyet arrived at Chelsea from Real Zaragoza in 1997, having helped the Spanish side beat Arsenal in the Cup Winners’ Cup final two years earlier.

The Uruguayan enjoyed success at Stamford Bridge, winning the competition again in 1998, as well as an FA Cup two seasons later.

After 45 goals in 143 appearances from midfield, Poyet signed for Spurs in 2001.

He produced some decent performances at White Hart Lane, helping Hoddle’s side to the League Cup final in 2002 – but left in 2004 after injuries blighted his spell at the club.

WILLIAM GALLAS

French defender William Gallas enjoyed the greatest success of his unusual career at Chelsea.

He appeared over 200 times for the Blues, forming part of their solid defence that won back to back titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

Gallas joined Arsenal in 2006 as part of the deal that saw Ashley Cole move to Stamford Bridge.

After a four-year stint at the Emirates that saw him wear the captain’s armband, he moved to Spurs – where he looked distinctly past his best for much of his three-year spell.

CARLO CUDICINI

Carlo Cudicini arrived at Chelsea, initially on loan, from Castel di Sangro in 1999.

In his early years at the Bridge he beat off competition from Ed de Goey and Mark Bosnich to claim the No1 jersey.

He was usurped by Petr Cech following the Czech’s arrival in 2004, however, but remained as back-up until January 2009.

Cudicini joined Spurs midway through the 2008-09 season, and would provide back-up for the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Brad Friedel and Hugo Lloris over the next four years.

Chelsea Appearances – 216

Tottenham appearances – 37
