Forgotten ex-Chelsea and England star Danny Drinkwater wants to return to former club after year in exile

FORMER England international Danny Drinkwater has revealed that he would like to re-join Leicester City.

The 33-year-old, who won the Premier League with the Foxes in 2016, has spent the past year away from football.

The midfielder is now open to a return to Leicester

After falling out of favour at Chelsea, he left Stamford Bridge as a free agent last summer and struggled to find another club.

But despite his lack of playing time, Drinkwater is hoping to find a new club ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

And he believes Leicester would be the perfect fit.

The midfielder told Sky Sports: “I’d one hundred per cent go back to Leicester, it’s a special place for me.

“To help them get back to the Premier League is something I’d love to do.

“It was hard to watch [them get relegated]. You look at the squad and it’s full of talent.

“They should see this as a reset. They had such a successful period before relegation, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield.

“If you go back 10 years, we were in the Championship and then look at what the club did in the next six to seven years.

“They’re in such a better place now than when I joined, they can get back up easily.”

Drinkwater signed for Leicester from Manchester United in 2012 and made 218 appearances for the club during his time at the King Power Stadium.

He left to join Chelsea in a £35million transfer in 2017, but he was limited to just 23 appearances during his five-year spell.

After leaving Stamford Bridge, the midfielder revealed that he was “angry” about the way he was treated during his time in West London.

He said: “I’m relieved, because it’s clear it wasn’t a situation that was good for me or the club.

“I’m angry because of how it’s gone and how I was treated. Not bitter though, or what ifs. It was a long time coming.”

Last month, Drinkwater admitted that he would be open to a move to Saudi Arabia.
