Former Premier League Star’s Wild Night Almost Ruined Record Transfer

Drunk and Jailed

Chris Sutton, once the most expensive Premier League signing in history, had his dream transfer almost collapse after a wild night out led to his arrest. The former England international was on the brink of joining Blackburn from Norwich in 1994 when he found himself behind bars.

Fear of a Collapsed Deal

Sutton, celebrating his impending move with his teammates, had one drink too many and ended up crashing into another car. Fearing that his deal would fall through, Sutton worried that Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish would cancel the transfer.

Lucky Escape

Thankfully, Sutton was released the next day and went on to complete his £5m move to Blackburn, a then-record fee. Sutton jokingly admitted that the only man he feared more than Dalglish was his father, who was furious with him for getting arrested.

Successful Career

Sutton's time at Blackburn proved fruitful as he helped the club lift the title in his first season, scoring 15 goals alongside Alan Shearer. However, the club suffered a decline and were eventually relegated in 1999. Sutton would go on to play for Chelsea and also had a brief managerial stint.
