Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in Twitter spat after Cristiano Ronaldo’s bombshell Man Utd transfer request

GARY NEVILLE and Jamie Carragher engaged in a public Twitter spat on Saturday over Cristiano Ronaldo’s request to leave Manchester United.

Ronaldo, 37, recently informed club chiefs that wants to leave Old Trafford this summer if a satisfactory offer is received.

Ronaldo has asked Man Utd chiefs to accept any suitable offers

He is said to be unhappy at the prospect of playing in the Europa League next season for the first time in almost two decades as he wants another crack at Champions League glory.

But, despite being named player of the year by Man Utd fans, Liverpool icon Carragher believes Ronaldo actually made the Red Devils WORSE last season.

He tweeted: “Ronaldo did exactly what I thought he would do, score goals but make the team worse.

“The transfer request also kills the idea he turned down Man City because of his love for Man United!”

This sparked a passionate reaction from United legend Neville, who replied with: “I get it, you’re full of yourselves but he can turn down City for United because he likes them more and still want to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club.

“Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success.”

Carragher responded to the jibe by calling his Sky Sports colleague a clown, adding: “City didn’t want him you (clown face emoji) and you’re the same fella who kept saying it was like Elvis had arrived in Manchester! Elvis has left the building.”

And Neville put an end to the spat with a reference to the musical icon, simply stating: “A little less conversation.”

The Portugal skipper was Man Utd’s top goalscorer last season

Carragher has previously urged the Red Devils to get rid of Ronaldo, claiming he was a poor addition to the squad.

The former defender said: “I’m convinced [Ten Hag] has got to do it with Ronaldo. I’m convinced.

“Whether he’s allowed to or not, and I’ve said this consistently through this season, that was not a good signing.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time, and I’m seen as the guy that’s criticising Ronaldo.

“Ronaldo’s a miles better player than I was; I couldn’t even lace his boots, obviously.

“But I’m not saying that to be disrespectful to him – he’s amazing.

“Ronaldo has never played in a team this bad. He’s always played for great teams.

“His attitude of trying to be the main man, getting the goals, driving people on; when you’re in a great team, they’re seen as positives.

“When you’re not playing for a great team, it can be seen as a negative, and I think it has been a negative this season.

“Man United can’t go into next season with a forward who’s going to be 38.

“Even if he does score goals, that’s not right for Man United – one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Man Utd have insisted that Ronaldo will remain in red until his contract expires next summer, but Chelsea and Bayern Munich have already considered a swoop.

The Blues have been keeping tabs on his situation at Old Trafford as they are keen to make him a marquee signing.
