Greenwood, 18, becomes youngest Man Utd player to score and assist in Europe as Scholes tips him to outshine Rashford

MASON GREENWOOD became the youngest player in Manchester United to score and assist in a single European game against Partizan Belgrade – with Paul Scholes tips him to outshine Marcus Rashford.

The young striker, 18, netted his third senior goal for the Red Devils and set up another in the 3-0 drubbing on Thursday.

Scholes reckons Greenwood will be a better finisher than Rashford as he became the youngest United star to score and assist in a European game

Greenwood had already eclipsed Rashford to become United‘s youngest European goalscorer against Astana in September.

And now Scholes believes he will become a better finisher than his team-mate, four years his senior.

Scholes claimed: “If Marcus lacks anything it’s a little bit of composure in front of goal.

“I think Greenwood will eventually be a better goalscorer than Marcus. But [Rashford’s] all round play has been brilliant.’

“He’s probably a scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer. He lacks that bit of composure but he’s still a young player and I think that will come.”

Next up for Greenwood will be to finally break his Premier League duck – having played eight times, mostly from the bench, without scoring.

The youngster previously scored against Astana in the Europa League and Rochdale in the Carabao Cup before his Partizan Belgrade strike.

United fans will be hoping Greenwood can be the long-term answer to their centre-forward woes, with many concerned about Rashford’s conversion rate.

The England international, 22, has scored eight times in all competitions this season but has missed a hatful of chances, with many believing he is better suited to playing on the wing.

And Scholes believes the attacking ranks are the real concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The ex-England star claimed: “I think the big problem with this team is the attacking players.

“I think it’s obvious for everyone to see that they lack creativity and I think in the forward areas it’s a real struggle.

“We always want players in the team to take risks but it just looks like the quality isn’t there.

“We’ve spoken about this all season now, probably the last couple of years, in forward areas.

“I think in other areas you’re OK, if Pogba comes back into midfield with McTominany, it looks good.

“I think possibly at centre-half they could need a partner for Maguire. Tuanzebe looks a good option. I’m not sure about Lindelof.

“I think everywhere else is looking OK but it’s just them forward areas, those creative areas, where it’s a real struggle.”
