MATCH of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray has deleted his Twitter after a harsh social media backlash he received following comments made regarding Marcus Rashford’s amazing charity work.

The Manchester United striker is now joint-favourite for Sports Personality of the Year following his tremendous work in campaigning for children to get free school meals over the holidays.

After the government turned down his bid to extend school meals, an army of cafes across the UK backed his pledge.

The 22-year-old has also raised £20million for charity FareShare, and volunteered his own time to help staff on Thursday.

When the camera panned to Rashford during highlights of United’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, Mowbray said: “He didn’t get a win in parliament, but he got the winner in Paris.

His comments were met with shock from viewers who took to Twitter in response.

One said: “Whether you agree children should be fed or not…”

Another added: “Utterly ridiculous.”

Mowbray has defended his comments and hints he was referring to the majority 322 politicians who voted against his pledge.

First he retweeted a comment that read: “Why don’t you all stop trolling! It was so clear that Guy Mowbray was referring to the politicians who are not agreeing with Rashford! grow up!”

He then wrote the statement: “I really think it is time to go now.

“Disturbing getting hounded by people whose view of a situation is in reality the same as mine.

“The first things I said were purely factual.

“The latter was wholesome praise of someone fighting a noble cause. That’s it. Couldn’t have done anymore. Shouldn’t have done any less.”
