HELDER COSTA scored the ‘most unfortunate own goal in history’ as Leeds slipped 3-1 behind at Crystal Palace.

Having gone 2-0 down at Selhurst Park through goals from Scott Dann and Eberechi Eze, Patrick Bamford gave the visitors hope after he halved the lead in a frenetic first half an hour.

Costa scored an own goal from close to the corner flag after the ball deflected off his foot and into the net

Costa somehow scored an own goal from outside of the box near the byline

But Crystal Palace restored their two-goal cushion in the most-bizarre of circumstances.

Winger Costa put in a lung-busting sprint to track back and snuff out an attack led by the marauding Patrick van Aanholt.

As the Eagles left-back unleashed his low cross, Costa dived in outside the box and close to the corner flag.

But somehow, from the most-improbable of angles the ball nicked off Costa’s toe and trickled inside Illan Meslier’s near post.

The Leeds goalkeeper must take the blame for the own goal, with his feet seemingly stuck in treacle.

But the strike will go down as a Costa own goal – with BBC pundit Matthew Upson quick to sympathise.

Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live: “What an unfortunate mistake… it was more of a deflection really.

“It is a wicked deflection but I think Illan Meslier’s position is too central of the goal… he’s not close enough to the near post.

Van Aanholt could scarcely believe his luck after his cross was deflected in

“How that squirms over the line I have no idea.

“But [Meslier] is so late in reacting he almost doesn’t anticipate or see the reaction.

“Helder Costa is the unfortunate one that it deflects off but lucky stuff for Palace.”

The commentator on duty for BT Sport Box Office went further, calling it the ‘most unfortunate own goal in history’.
