How Man Utd should line up according to Paul Scholes with Mason Greenwood, Axel Tuanzebe and Paul Pogba

PAUL SCHOLES has picked his Manchester United starting XI – and it is one packed with goalscoring ability.

The Old Trafford legend wants to see Anthony Martial deployed up top with Marcus Rashford in the No 10 role.

This is how Scholes would like to see Man Utd line up

Speedster Dan James would go on the left wing while Mason Greenwood gets opportunity to supply from the right.

Scott McTominay – who limped off injured in the 3-0 win over Partizan Belgrade last night – occupies midfield with Paul Pogba.

Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are full-backs on the left and right wings respectively while Harry Maguire and Axel Tuanzebe fill in at centre-back with David De Gea in goal.

There is no room for Victor Lindelof, a player that Scholes has reservations about despite starting 10 of United‘s 11 Premier League games so far this season.

And the former midfield maestro says a new injection of creativity is needed up top because Rashford lacks composure in front of goal.

Enter Mason Greenwood, who, alongside Martial and Rashford, scored in the Europa League win.

Scholes said: “If Marcus lacks anything, it’s a little bit of composure in front of goal.

“I think Greenwood will eventually be a better goalscorer than Marcus. But his [Rashford’s] all round play has been brilliant.

“He’s probably a scorer of great goals rather than a great goalscorer.

“He lacks that bit of composure but he’s still a young player and I think that will come.”

Rashford scored a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque screamer against Chelsea at the end of last month.

But Scholes thinks he would be better suited in a playmaker role – something which did not go down too well with fans.

One said: “Rashford can’t play 10.”

Another posted: “Rashford in the 10. No chance.”

A fellow fan wrote: “Rashford at 10? Listen I love Scholesy but anyone who has watched us or England since Rashford burst on the scene knows full well he is a left winger.”

Scholes – who reckons his team should sign Mesut Ozil – also thinks Utd need more options up top and should dip into the market in January.

And he believes the time could be right to make do without Lindelof.

He added: “I think the big problem with this team is the attacking players.

“I think it’s obvious for everyone to see that they lack creativity and I think in the forward areas it’s a real struggle.

“We always want players in the team to take risks but it just looks like the quality isn’t there.

“We’ve spoken about this all season now, probably the last couple of years, in forward areas.

Scholes believes Greenwood will be a better goalscorer than Rashford

“I think in other areas you’re OK, if Pogba comes back into midfield with McTominany, it looks good.

“I think possibly at centre-half they could need a partner for Maguire. Tuanzebe looks a good option. I’m not sure about Lindelof.

“I think everywhere else is looking OK but it’s just them forward areas, them creative areas, where it’s a real struggle.”
