How Modric met ‘mysterious’ Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on his £1bn yacht in secret transfer talks while at Spurs

LUKA MODRIC has revealed how “mysterious” Roman Abramovich attempted to woo him to Chelsea by holding secret talks on his private yacht.

The Croatian had just played his third season at Tottenham and was regarded as one of the league’s best midfielders when Abramovich came calling.

The now Real Madrid ace was preparing for his summer holiday when he was whisked to Cannes on a private jet before being picked up by the Russian’s security team in Nice.

After a speed boat ride to the middle of the ocean, he was greeted by Abramovich aboard his £1billion yacht who was relaxing with his wife and child.

Abramovich purchased his yacht for £300million in 2010 but added luxury extras and security measures to increase the value.

It is 533ft long – more than twice the size of the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

In his own words, Modric said: “It was all very exciting.

“Twenty or so people, who seemed part of the security detail, met us at the boat.

“It was quick and well organised; just as we made ourselves comfortable on one of the luxury decks, Abramovich showed up.

“I was fascinated by the discreet disappearance of all the security people just as he arrived. It was obvious they were well trained – their timing was perfect.

“During our meeting on the Côte d’Azur, he left an impression of a relaxed, somewhat mysterious person.

“He wasn’t beating around the bush and said: ‘We know you are a quality player. I’d like you to sign for Chelsea.’”

After 20 minutes, Modric was already sold on the idea of playing for Chelsea and consistently testing himself at a higher level.

On his return to England, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy dug in his heels and refused to let his star player leave despite Modric’s plea.

Chelsea had numerous offers turned down by Levy despite Modric handing in a transfer request.

He finally accepted he was forced to remain at Spurs for at least another season before Real Madrid came calling.

Modric spent four years in North London before his switch to the Spanish capital and hasn’t looked back since.

He has won seven major pieces of silverware but his best campaign arrived in 2018 when he was awarded his first and only Ballon d’Or.
